Bob Haro's Master BMX Bike of the 1980s

trail biking

Bob Haro’s "Master", a cutting-edge freestyle bicycle that revolutionized BMX was called the "Master". It was one the most iconic models of the 1980s. With a frame built around progressive geometry and a bold graphic scheme, the Master was designed for the future of BMX. The master sets the standard in design excellence, whether it's freestyle riding or flatland.

Haro Bikes, a leading brand in freestyle BMX bikes, was dominant in the 1980s. These bikes were the winners of almost every race in the sport. This made them the most popular bikes in the era. FREESTYLIN’ Magazine published their first commercial in 1985. However, it wasn't until later that the company produced a series of freestyle bikes that would define a new era in the freestyle scene.

The Haro Freestyler was the first model to be released. Both models have a similar seat mast and head tube angle. They share a swaged front triangle. But they have some key differences.

One significant difference is the shape and size of the fork leg. The fork stander in the first generation was higher up on the fork leg. This allowed forks to fold up easily and kept the bike upright.

Later versions of the "Master" were redesigned. For example, the gussets at the front of the bike were machined to eliminate cracking issues. These frames were fitted with more refined chainstays. Non-drive side dropouts were instead brazed on, but they were offset.

Torker BMX, Fullerton produced the second generation USA Haro Master. It was very similar to the original 1983 model. There were many features added, such as tapered seat stays and swept dropouts.

The introduction of a fully-welded gusset at its front end was another significant improvement. Not only did this reduce the risk of cracking, but it also gave the Master a marginal weight advantage.

The highest specification model of all time was the 1986 model. Many of these bikes were based upon the 1986 model. However, the specs were adjusted to reflect the price of the 1986 frame. Unlike the FST and Sport, the Master did not have a stacked seat mast.

Three color options were available for the Haro Master. Neon Green was the team issue. Gray and blue were also available. Haro Master came in two sizes, just like Sport and FST.

The 86 "Master" was a very collectible bike. These bikes were given to the team riders Ron Wilkerson and Dave Nourie. Some bikes were equipped only with the rear triangle. Other models were equipped with serial numbers starting in 1985.

When it came time to reissue both frames, Haro decided to make them using the era-correct manufacturing processes. This time they used locally sourced materials.
